It is a misconception that learning comes only through books. Children learn through their surroundings, situations, and ambiance in which they have been living and learning. This atmosphere of learning is further enriched when we do activities like question answer session, making children write on a topic in their own words and giving them the opportunity to express their feelings through painting.
Efforts should be made to make children learn through play way method since this leads to the mental and physical development of the child. The foundations of Library Program, a flagship intervention of Pratham Education Foundation has been laid on these parameters and has shown encouraging results.
In Himachal Pradesh, Library Program runs across 10 intervention districts of Himachal Pradesh. Team members from Pratham visit villages and create a learning atmosphere for children through by conducting innovative activities focused on enhancing their knowledge. The beauty of Library program lies in its strength of motivating and connecting volunteers in this learning process. These volunteers later become the torch bearers in the community learning model and contribute towards enhancing the learning levels in their respective communities.
Key Objectives of Library Program:
- To create a learning atmosphere for children so that they are able to enhance their knowledge base.
- To create an ambient atmosphere for learning.
- To orient the community about the learning gains made by their children.
- To motivate the children to learn and work in groups.
The library camps are generally held during evening hours and children always look forward to meeting their mentors and learn new skills that enhance their knowledge base. For Pratham, Library program is a key reflection of its core ideology of spreading the knowledge of Education far and wide in remote regions of India and Pratham Himachal Pradesh has been making its contribution to making this mission a success.
